Royals caravan keeps on chuggingCrew stops in Kansas as GM Moore keeps tabsBy Dick Kaegel / MLB.com The second day of this Royals Caravan trip took the group to the Kansas communities of Junction City, Salina and Hutchinson. General manager Dayton Moore will be replaced for Wednesday's activities by his associate, Dean Taylor, but before he left Moore gave us this report on Tuesday's activities: "It's great. I love being out here among so many passionate fans. We just had a great turnout in Hutchinson. I don't know how many people were there but it was in the hundreds, I can tell you that. The fans have been enthusiastic, they're excited and that makes it fun. "I think it's important. Dean Taylor or J.J. Picollo or myself will be on the Caravans and as long as I'm general manager, we'll take that approach. We expect our players to be involved in this and so our front office people need to be involved as well. We need to be out there with our fans. "We answer a lot of questions -- about Alex Gordon, Mark Teahen. People are really excited about our bullpen. They want to talk about Gil Meche, Angel Berroa, and is Mike Sweeney healthy. They want to know about what's happening in the Minors and about our Latin American program. So the questions have actually been very good. "A few fans want to know if we've got any more deals coming. But the core group of players that we have on our team right now is what we're going with in Spring Training. That's not to say we won't add a little piece here or a little piece there but I don't anticipate adding anything major but, at the same time, you go a couple of weeks without doing something and ... "It's been great. A lot of people are excited about the stadium renovations. I mean, literally fans will come up with tears in their eyes just wanting to root for the team. Or they are so excited about Gil Meche or Ryan Shealy or Mark Teahen. These people love the Royals." To check the Royals Caravan blog, go to this link: royals.mlblogs.com/

Monday's excursion to the Nebraska communities of Beatrice, Hastings and Kearney was cancelled. So was Tuesday's first stop at Grand Island. The Royals hope to pick up the Caravan schedule at 2 p.m. CT on Tuesday at the York, Neb., Middle School. Then comes a 5 p.m. stop at Sportscasters Bar and Grill in Lincoln. On Wednesday, the Caravan schedule calls for visits to Omaha and Nebraska City. Included in the traveling party are pitcher Ryan Braun, first baseman Ryan Shealy, coach Brian Poldberg, Royals Hall of Famer Frank White and broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre. Minor appointments: The Royals have named Jerry Nyman as pitching coach and Kyle Turner as trainer for Idaho Falls in the Pioneer League. Nyman, who pitched in the Majors for the White Sox and the Padres, has worked the last three seasons as the Devil Rays' Minor League pitching coordinator. In 2003, Nyman was the Idaho Falls pitching coach when the rookie club was affiliated with the Padres. He also coached for eight years in the Braves organization. Turner spent the last seven years as a trainer in the Rangers' Minor League system.

Pitcher Ryan Braun gave us this report on the day's events: "We went to the York Middle School and it was really good. The kids had an assembly and they had a lot of enthusiasm. They were really excited and I was surprised by it. They even sung their school song at the end for us and that was pretty cool. "We just got back from Sportscasters in Lincoln and there were about 150 people there and we had a radio broadcast. A lot of them were saying that Nebraska has a nice Royals fan base here and that they were really looking forward to next year. They got autographs and for 10 or 15 minutes we got to stick around and talk to them. Frank White is with us and everybody has good memories of him. "Honestly, I don't know how many people know exactly who I am. There were a good number of people, though, who said they were glad I was able to come up last year and that they were looking forward to me being there this year. "I'm really looking forward to going to Spring Training and competing for a spot. It's coming up soon. "Now we're on the bus -- like [Mark] Teahen said last week, it's like a rock-star bus - and we're heading for Omaha. That's where I played part of last season. "Ryan Shealy was able to get here today and he joined us. And we also have our broadcaster, Ryan Lefebvre, on the trip. So at least they couldn't get our names wrong."
