OK, dejesus9's vote for Epstein the last round eliminated him. I'll go ahead and count Dombrowski as the mtroyals vote for this round. It's now between Dombrowski and Shapiro.
I'll vote for Dombrowski this round as well.
So.....
2 for Dombrowski 1 for Shapiro

Dombrowski. He needs money to win. Dombrowski left the Florida Marlins organization in 2002. In 2003 the Florida Marlins won the World Series with the 27th ranked payroll in MLB. Now the team did acquire Pudge and Juan Pierre after he left, but that pitching staff is what carried the team and Burnett, Beckett, Willis, etc. were brought in by Dombrowski. Therefore I think it is safe to say he won with little payroll. He doesn't deserve full credit for that team but he does deserve a good deal of credit. He put that team on the verge and most importantly he put together a lot of cheap talent that allowed that team to add a couple of veterans and a new manager and make a glorious run to a championship.

They weren't going anywhere until they bought the 1997 World Series. And when he was instructed to firesale, he didn't bring back much talent from those high-salaried veterans.
"And a new manager"? You need cheap talent so you can afford to fire Jeff Torberg and hire Jack McKeon?
Rodriguez Hollandsworth Pierre Encarncion Pavano Redman Willis Urbina Spooneybarger
All players acquired after Dombrowski.
You guys really seem to be big Detroit Tigers fans. Another Tiger is in line to win another Survivor.

I think the fans on this board have a healthy respect for our AL Central counterparts. Gardenhire was runner up to Jim Leyland in Managers Survivor and Shapiro and Dombrowski are heading for a photo finish in the GM Survivor. Right now the AL Central is the best in baseball and many here recognize that. That does not mean we are fans of these people or teams, we just acknowledge the quality of opponents that we have.
IMO some of the good GMs in the National League got short changed in this voting game, but it is what it is. If I was picking the best GM in baseball it wouldn't necessarily be Dombrowski, but I do think he is in that top 4 of the best in the game.

Mark Shapiro wins the 2007 Survivor Contest for Best General Manager throughout Major League Baseball. Any thoughts on the contest? Any thoughts on how future contests should be conducted? Honestly, my vote would have gone to either Billy Beane or Theo Epstein. Oddly enough, I believe both of their abilities are shadowed somewhat by team payroll. The final list of G.M.'s eliminated is on the first page. Thanks to all the newbies and infrequent RN readers who participated. Of course, thanks to all the moderators and administrator who also participated. ;D
