Scherzer has bad mechanics. Go Porcello. He's a stud. He's so polished, he could be here in 3 years.
Detwiler is my 2nd choice.

Also this week Max Scherzer signed with the Ft Worth Cats in the American Assoc. just like Hochevar did last year. If he shows the same stuff he did as a Soph/USA representative, then he could be the pick for the Royals. www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/news/263730.htmlScherzer Signs With Independent League TeamBy J.J. Cooper Max Scherzer will try to follow in Luke Hochevar's footsteps in Fort Worth. Scherzer, the only remaining unsigned first rounder from last year's draft, has signed with the independent Fort Worth Cats (American Association), the same team that Hochevar signed with last spring. After several strong outings in Fort Worth, Hochevar, the 40th pick in the 2005 draft, went No. 1 overall to the Royals last June. Several other Boras clients have also signed with independent league teams before signing new deals with the teams that had already drafted them. The Diamondbacks signed Stephen Drew after a 19-game stint in the Atlantic League while Jered Weaver signed but did not pitch for an Atlantic League squad. Scherzer, taken 11th overall last June by the Diamondbacks, is represented by Scott Boras, as is Hochevar. When Boras looked to place Scherzer in Fort Worth, Cats director of player personnel Barry Moss said that he didn't have to think too hard before accepting the offer. In addition to Scherzer, Fort Worth also signed former Cubs first-rounder Chadd Blasko, another Boras client. Chicago released Blasko at the end of spring training , and the Cats plan to have him pitch in relief behind Scherzer so scouts can see both players on the same night. Scherzer will make his first start on May 2 in an exhibition game at Baylor's ballpark. He'll throw again May 7 at Fort Worth in an exhibition game, then make his regular-season debut at home on May 12. He'll throw again in Fort Worth on May 18, then on the road in Sioux Falls, S.D., on May 23. He'll return to Fort Worth for a start on May 28, and is scheduled to make one final start on June 2, though Hochevar was scratched from a similar start last year once he'd shown his plus stuff in the previous outings. According to Moss, Scherzer has been working out at UC Irvine for several months and was ready to go to spring training and pitch had a deal been worked out with the Diamondbacks. He has continued to throw bullpens since, and should be relatively stretched out for his first start. "The Boras group has some ex-baseball players that know the routines to get this stuff done," Fort Worth manager Stan Hough said. "Max told me he's ready to throw 75-90 pitches right now. We'll probably hold him to 75-80 right off the bat." Scherzer, still can sign with the Diamondbacks before May 31. He entered 2006 as the top righthanded pitching prospect in the draft after working in the mid- to upper 90s with Missouri and Team USA as a sophomore. But he came down with biceps tendinitis, which took a toll on his stuff and concerned several clubs. His stint in Fort Worth will give scouts a chance to see if his stuff has returned to the form that he's shown in the past. Scherzer doesn't figure to equal Hochevar's rise to the No. 1 overall pick, but he should benefit from a 2007 draft crop lacking in frontline college righthanders. The only two currently rated as first-rounders are North Carolina State's Andrew Brackman and Texas Christian's Jake Arrieta, both of whom have been disappointing and also are advised by Boras. "If Max Scherzer is healthy and throwing 95-98 mph like he was as a sophomore," one scouting director said, "he's right behind David Price at the top of the draft." April 18, 2007

On April 20th, Baseball America released their mid-season update on the draft rankings. Here are the top few players they have rated.
1. David Price LP Vanderbilt- They say teams see him as a virtual lock to go #1. 2. Matt Weiters C Georgia Tech 3. Josh Vitters 3b Cypress HS - Scouts call him the safest pick in the draft and its best hitter. 4. Matt Harvey RP Fitch HS - 5. Rick Porcello RP Seton Hall Prep - Scouts torn as to who is better between these 2 HS arms. 6. Andrew Brackman RP NCST - Been inconsistant this spring. 7. Ross Detwiler LP SW Missouri St. - Throws 93-95 as a lefty.
They rank LaPorta at #12 and comment on his improved approach at the plate and his improved defense at first. Looks like a future slugging first-baseman who hits for power and around .270/.280.

I'd take Detwiler or Porcello. Porcello has received some of the highest grades ever in the past 10 years.

Wes Roemer is a good college pitcher who is going somewhat under the radar. The Cal St Fullerton ace is a control freak! IMO I still say we go with Wieters if Price is gone,.

Here is a good Q & A with Baseball America from MAy 6th: www.baseballamerica.com/today/askba/263861.htmlSorry about the Sunday rather than Friday edition of Ask BA, but it's that time of year (draft time). It's generally understood that David Price is the best college pitcher available in the upcoming draft, and Rick Porcello is arguably the best high school pitcher. What's the main difference that separates them, who has the higher ceiling and who will have the better major league career? Brian Welch Boylston, Mass. If the draft were held today, my best guess would be that the Devil Rays would take Price out of Vanderbilt with the No. 1 overall selection and the Royals would follow by selecting Porcello out of Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, N.J.) with the No. 2 pick. The biggest distinction is that Price is a lefty and Porcello is a righty. Price is also three years older and more experienced, so there's more of a track record and less projection involved with him. In terms of stuff, there's not much difference. Both guys pitch around 93-94 mph with their fastball and can reach the mid-90s, and both have hard breaking balls. Price has a little more life on his fastball. Though Porcello doesn't need it much in high school, he has an effective changeup, as does Price. Being lefthanded gives Price a higher ceiling. Given that he has proven himself against tougher competition and stayed healthier for a longer period of time, I'd give him the edge for having a better future. But there's not much difference between them. It looks like Matt Wieters and Josh Vitters are establishing themselves as the top college and high school position players in the 2007 draft class, and it looks like the Cubs may have their choice between the two at No. 3. What, besides experience, separates these two and might make the difference between taking one over the other? What weaknesses do they have? Justin RidDick Nashville More comparing and contrasting. The biggest difference between these two is their position. Wieters is a catcher at Georgia Tech, while Vitters is a third baseman at Cypress (Calif.) High. That gives Wieters more positional value than Vitters, though it's not easy to find third basemen either. Vitters is the best pure hitter in this draft and projects to hit for a higher average. Wieters has more present power than Vitters, and he's a switch-hitter to boot. Not that it will play into his draft status, but Wieters also has shown a 94-98 mph fastball off the mound. Vitters doesn't have a glaring weakness. He's not a stud athlete or a plus runner, but he's not a slug either. He'll need to add some strength to his 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame, but he's not even 18 yet and there's no reason he shouldn't. As you can tell, I'm nitpicking here. As for Wieters, his detractors think his size (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) hampers his agility and receiving. One scouting director, who also isn't enamored of his hitting ability, compared him to Ben Davis, who was a bust as the No. 2 overall pick in 1995. But that's not the consensus. One other consideration to keep in mind is that Wieters' advisor is Scott Boras. He'll likely seek a major league contract for Wieters, while Vitters is more likely to sign for slot money. Cost won't be the consideration for the Cubs, but I keep hearing that they love Vitters. Right now, he'd be my projection for the No. 3 overall pick.

It looks like Weiters is slipping out of the top 3 talents in the draft and Porcello is getting graded as the best HS pitcher since Josh Beckett.
I think we should draft Porcello if Price is gone.

Since David Price accepted my friend invitation on Facebook, I'm voting that we draft him. Here's a letter I sent him through that website: Hey David, It's an honor to see you on Facebook. I run an online Kansas City Royals fanboard, and have a fan-group here on Facebook. As a diehard Royals fan, I will be pulling for you in June. Although the Royals have struggled quite a bit over the years, our organization is starting to put together an excellent crop of young position players - Alex Gordon, Billy Butler, and Mark Teahen to name a few. With our new G.M., originally from the Atlanta organization, we're starting to put together an excellent Minor League development team which we feel will translate into championship baseball here in Kansas City, with the young core we have intact now. I can't speak on behalf of the organization - I am merely a lowly fan, but I hope we can someday see you pitch for our team. Good luck in the draft! David Price: Thank you very much!
