This thread may prove controversial to some, but I'm going to sticky it atop the General Discussion forum.
This thread is for the fans who have endured hardship and misery over these many years, to follow a franchise directly hanging from the heels of an owner who has continually refused to commit payroll in scouting, Minor Leagues, and Major Leagues. We seldom hear from this man in the media - despite the multiple times he has had explaining to do with regard to intervening in management decisions, resulting in poor personnel moves, the times he has made incorrect or wrong hirings, committed dangerously cheaply in the draft, and much more.
Recently we have read rumors where multiple members of the Royals' front office have stated that the team would not commit more than $60 million in 2009 payroll. Such low commitments are absolutely unacceptable, given that 2 1/2 years ago, Jackson County residents handed out $220 million in payroll to arguably the worst franchise in sports, at the time, or else face the possibility of having our beloved team change cities. Also, it is unacceptable, because we have endured such cheapness for well over a decade.
Consider this thread an open plea to David Glass to begin committing payroll to our hometown team. As fans who commit valuable time and money to our beloved franchise, we deserve it. It's true that Glass has very, very recently begun to commit to a realistic scouting budget, Minor League development, Latin America, and the amateur draft itself. However, it is only the tip of the iceberg. Such commitments are nowhere close to enough to ensuring that the franchise becomes respectable everywhere.
The hiring of Dayton Moore was symbolic of progression as a franchise toward respectability. We must continue to progress until the end! We should not revert to our old ways.
This petition calls for the following:
a) Ownership must begin committing a realistic payroll at the Major League Level,
b) Local media should begin questioning the Royals brass about payroll issues more vigorously, and
c) Ownership should continue to refrain from intervening in management decisions, and finally,
d) Ownership should continue to invest reasonably in scouting, Minor League, and draft budgets.
If you agree to the above provisions, sign your name (or your Royals Nation screen name), and add any comments, if you wish.
